Fire pit

Looking to build a fire pit, needs some ideas, pics of ones you have.

I have alot of field stone available,  and do alot of hardwood fire cooking1

It is a usable...liveable village setup...in my Brothers Backyard...the Scouts love it.... and it really adds to the Native American Theme He has built into His Property

Mine is a simple damaged rim, that a trucker friend of mine gave to me. Note the remnant of a bow that didn't make it.

We had made one of stones, that were gathered around our property. It turned out to be dangerous, as some of the rocks literally exploded, sending hot fragments everywhere. I have no idea what kind of stones they were, but they were of a charcoal color, with no cortex on them.

Wish I had a picture of it, but, one of the best ideas I saw was a swivelling iron grate.  Just a pit fire area, but they had built a large grate cooking surface - circular in shape about 1.5-2 foot radius that basically swivelled on a pole.  The thing was a champion.  They had a little spring fed trout pond about 20 yards from the firepit.  Good stuff.

In one of those links up there with instructions on making a fire pit, pay close attention if you are building one with stones.  If you're making a circle with stones, you are going to have to put fire brick down on the inside.  That will shield the purty rocks on the outside enough so that they don't get too hot and explode.

I use a keyhole shaped fire pit when cooking. The round part is built down wind of the trench. Boil with the flames in the round part and rake the coals into the trench to cook with. Simple and timeless.

Thanks, Gentlemen for your pics an ideas! I have a creek running thru my property, but will not use rocks from there! The field in fron t of the house is full of rocks, and we have a Few Piles, built up obver the years!

I'm going to weld a swinging style grate up, just woindering if any have done some masonry work with the field stone? Firepit/ outdoor fireplace?

Mike, your brother has a neat, Native set-up! Wish I had something like that as a Kid! :)

Bullitt, you *should* be fine with any stone you use, as long as you put the fire brick between the stone and the fire.
