bunch of poplar shafts..

so i went through an insane amount of poplar about a month ago and found 2 dozen good shafts.  fletched them all up the same day as well, but no points.   didnt know what i wanted to do with them, field points, stone points, metal points.. 


i was going to initially use homemade broadheads.  but then i found these little guys.  they are an inch wide and weight roughly 100 grains



total arrow weight is about 360 grains.  not a lot of mass.  but the feathers are just turkey feathers trimmed.  i used fletch tape and applied them by hand and then glued down the ends with some duco.  the heads i put on with the good hot glue..

360 gr with the points or are you talking just the shaft weight. Jawge

If they have self-nocks I'd strongly suggest that you wrap 'em (just below the nock) with some sinew or strong thread set in superglue.

what weight of bow are you gonna shoot them from?

personally i would only use them in light weight bows(30-40#) for target shooting
waaaay to light for me to hunt with,especially with a heavier bow

thats total weight.  with the feathers.  the heaviest bow i have is 47lbs.  and my 2 others are around 40.  ive only shot one of them so far.  flies pretty good from ten yards.

i think i will try some oak shafts next for some more weight.

aero, they should work decent from them bows
but ifn your gonna hunt with them bows,heavier arrows will penetrate much better
ill bet them light arrows zip out of a bow though

i found a couple red oak dowels and i put a few together.  600 grains with that head.  i havent planned to hunt anything big for a long time.

well if the grain is straight in them dowels
at that weight i would hunt with them

are those 5/16"?

I usually get about 450 grains total (125 grain point) when i make them from 5/16" poplar. 28-29" long. I wonder why mine ar ea bit more?

I really like my oak dowel hunting arrows, it can take a long time to find oak that is straight grained but they sure make a heavy, durable, pretty arrow.

I'd check my scale. Poplar is a hardwood. If the point weighs 125 gr, then the shaft weighs about the same? That's light. Jawge

ill weight them again.  they do feel kinda light though.  i actually found my oak at walmart..

hehe, you guys are silly. they do look awesome in the quiver by the way, got ten of them in there!  the white shafts and dark moose contrast nicely.  thanks again.  and ive weighed them again, and they are more 450. i must have messed up on the weigh on the last ones.
