a nice little skinner.

last sunday i started knapping a blade from a piece of mahogany obsidian and i finished it through the week. i also played around with a piece of water buffulo horn to use for a handle. today i hafted the blade to the handle with pine pitch and sinew and made a little sheath from kangaroo hide that i tanned myself with wattle bark. it is stitched with sinew.
it's primitive throughout!

a nice little project comes to an end.......it's now waiting to skin something.

Cool project! Roo hide...have any ya wanna trade? ;D Would shipping be ridiculous? Anyone know if that is available here in the US- maybe at one of the big leather houses...

super nice little knife. Wish I had a piece of horn like that so I could copy that design.

very cool knife,looks to be the perfect size too  ;)

as far as roo hide in the US.
we have a fabric outlet store i the minneapolis area.they have every type of fabric you can think of
not to mention they have just about every type of leather too.they have regular cow leather,ostrich leather,tanned gator skins.
they have hair on hides,hairless hides etc.just about everything and what they dont have Tandy Leather has the rest.
i would just call around and ask the fabric/leather stores ya never know,god luck

I really like that knife!!  By the way, when it comes to skinning, a stone knife beats a steel knife hands down.

im not sure my self but i have heard its harder to damage the hide with stone versus steel when skinning
also heard they stay sharper longer,never tried it myself

beautiful little skinner there clint. did you harvest the sinew yourself? what from. one of the aboriginals i work with says kangaroo tail has good long lengths of sinew. he uses it on his spears.

otis, i use wallaby tail sinew. great stuff. i'm going to try making a bowstring for a self bow with it one day.

well i suppose wallaby and kangaroo sinew would be pretty similar....

how will you connect the strands to make a string?
