111# @ 32" boo/white oak
« on: November 01, 2010, 02:28:01 pm »
Just thought I would throw in a warbow that I finished today. There's so few bows being presented at this section...

This one is ~111# @ 32", and is made from bamboo and white oak (which is probably US). The oak is "fairly" dense. :)
After having been drawn several times to 32" on the tiller, and one time to 33", it only follows the string 1". If I remember correctly, it was glued up with only 1" reflex.
It has waterbuffalo sidenocks, and fastflight string.

I made a draw/force curve, which came out as straight as a ruler. My weight stops at 100#, so I wasn't able to plot it further than to 29", though, but this one definitely stores a lot of energy!

Am I able to shoot it myself?  No... 8)

That's awesome! I want to build one.

Nice work, I didn't know oak was capable of that, but then again, I'm pretty green...

Interesting to see a bow with oak belly
I tried an oak belly once with one of my bows (replacing the belly of an ash bow with oak)
it was 165lb to start with and held up no prolem at all but I got it down to 140lb in the end so I could actually draw the thing ;-)
- in fact this is one of the bows I show in my bow making guide (search Google for  "back street bowyer")

It held up fine for a good while then suddenly the belly decided to chrysal pretty much down it's length
I wonder if this was caused by the oak drying out too much ??
btw - the oak I used was American kiln dried (from my local builders wood yard)

Thanks guys!

Alan, it might have dried out a little and made the wood stiffer, putting more stress onto the same amount of wood, but I think it is more likely that you were starting to draw the bow further.

The quality of oak - as with most woods - varies from really poor to amazing. The board that this one came from is definitely one of the better ones I've used.

This one looks really fast!
I hope you sell it to someone who will use it on a regular basis. -I have some good white oak waiting for a backing strong enough to handle it. I think you've inspired me to try for a lamination again once I have time for it.
Really nice bow!
