Sinew/blacksnake backed osage
« on: May 13, 2010, 10:01:14 pm »
I finally finished this bow.  This is my first attempt at sinew backing and string making.  The sinew came loose the first time so I had to degrease better and apply new.  I backed it with black snake skins.  It is 60" long and ended up 50# @ 27".  I made the lower limb a little shorter than the top, following Dean Torges advice.  I am not sure if I like it or not.  My lower limb is probably not as stiff as is should be, but it shoots nice.  It has 4 coats of Tru-oil on it.  I used a piece of a leather jacket for the handle.  Thanks to PatB and everyone else that helped me along the way.

I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

finish work looks GREAT!  If it was mine I'd probably try to get it bending more mid limb and inner limbs but overall looks nice.

Hey nice bow, what snake is it?? - With the bending, I'd say NTD is right, too.

The snake skins were from black snakes.

I was trying to work on the tiller of the lower limb, but got to a point where I thought I should stop before I ended up with a broken bow.  It shoots, and I gained some knowledge  along the way.  My next bow is roughed out and I plan on chasing a ring on it this weekend.  I have been experimenting with steam bending tips.  I might try it on the next one.

Black Snakes...hmmm I'm guessing Black Rat Snakes.  Pretty snakes and I imagine great for backing bows.
