Pyramid 2 (Finished... ish)
« on: May 12, 2010, 08:28:58 pm »
Hi all,
Once more. with feeling.  My previous attempt at a pyramid style bow per TBB I & II ended up OK, but with an odd length and narrower than I'd intended, due to - ahem - "measurement issues"  :-[.
Second time's a charm, I hope...
65" ntn, 6" handle section, 3" wide at the fades, down to 5/8" at the nocks, which will probably get narrower as time goes by.  Looks like it'd be about 68#@28", if I let it get that far.  I'll probably go for 45# or so.  Full draw shot soon.
As always, I appreciate your observations,
Frode

If it doesn't rap the lintel, it might not be a longbow.

Great looking bow. I'm a sucker for a pyramidal profile.  Good start on the tiller as well.  Say, I have a question about that shave horse in the bottom pic.  Can you post some more pictures of it?  I really like the design.  Again, nice looking bow.  Thanks!

Looking great. Tiller looks spot on to me.

Thanks guys!
See this post http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,18508.0.html for the details (such as they are) on the horse.  One thing I've learned, this horse is so light (compared to the French original) you want that lower end anchored down really well.  Also, I'd probably make the foot bar longer/wider, to minimize side to side rocking.
Rich, the wood is hickory sap wood.  I got a real nice wide board, and when the yard cut it into narrower strips for me I came away with two or three nice all heart wood boards, and this one all sap wood.  Seems like I'd heard that the sap wood was OK too, so I figured I'd give it a try.  So far, so good.

OK, here it is, finally.  45#@24".  This one is definitely my favorite so far.  No hand shock at all, something that didn't consciously register until I picked up my 40# red oak long bow, which by comparison, rattles me from wrist to teeth and back again  :o ;D.  I haven't had a chance at the chronograph yet, but it is easily the fastest of my small collection so far, and if I were to narrow the tips a bit I'm guessing it would pick up a bit more speed.  Had it out over the weekend, and it easily shoots 110 yards in a light head wind.
I'm a happy camper, and did I mention, I like the hickory!?

Frode,
Very nice bow in all respects, the grain is beautiful.....but I think the pin knocks you made ought to be the poster-child for pin knocks. Those are perfect.
