Maple Board ?
« on: May 07, 2010, 07:34:07 pm »
I have a 1" x 1" x 60" Maple board that was left over from some cabinet facing. The grain looks to be pretty straight. If I backed it with burlap, would it make a fair drawing bow, if I don't screw up the tiller? ::)

probably put a string on it the way it is with that thickness.  just narrow the tips a bit, probably make a bend in the handle bow

I would just tiller it out for a bend in the handle bow, flat bottom, probably be about 5/8 thick in the handle section. maybe narrow the last 14" or so of each limb.

If the grain runs that nice the whole length, it seems like it would be fine to me.  I've done a couple, linen backed, from 1 x 2 boards that weren't quite that straight, and they both turned into good 40#'ers.

If it doesn't rap the lintel, it might not be a longbow.

Most of the grain runs like that. It runs out abot 10" from the end. All I have right now is burlap and bamboo. With it being only 60", I don't think I have any room to play.

If the bottom one is the edge grain you are all set. Do back it. What is your draw length? Do  not  glue any handles on. It is too short. Let the handle  bend. There's info on my site.Jawge
