What is it?
« on: May 05, 2010, 10:24:16 am »
I was going through a box of old stuff and came accross something i found when i was a kid. I grew up in central North Dakota and found this on our land just north of Mandan.

I drilled the hole when i was a kid for a necklace.

I think it's an old mountain lion tooth, your thoughts?

I'm thinking a tooth would have a root.  I was thinking a claw.  Maybe like a badger or something?
Wild guess on my part - my skills aren't super.

It is definitely not a Tooth....It's a Claw of some.Species...without any dimensions...its hard to guess what though
As a species we're fundamentally insane. Put more than two of us in a room, we pick sides and start dreaming up ways to kill one another. Why do you think we invented politics and religion.

It is very bony/toothy looking though as far as the actual material is concerned. if it's a claw then it must be petrified or something.

Yeah that's why i thought it was a tooth, because it looked so bone/tooth-like

there is quite a bit of dino stuff in ND although most of it is a little further west, near Dickenson.

It looks close to a badger claw - but not the same. It doesn't have the high arch on the top side and hooks more at the end than gradually like the badger claw. As for size, I think it would match, but for shape it doesn't. I think it's something else. Young bear maybe? Not really sure. I don't think it's a tooth though. Some kind of non-retractable claw. Wolverine maybe?
