Stone Point?

any ideas as to what this is.  looks to be knapped from quartzite.  i was thinking atlatl point, but the offset flanges throws me.  a student of mine found it on the creek bank and brought it for me to figure out what it was.

      I dont know squat about knapping but looking at the shape of the head I was wondering if the head could be a "fish point". I've seen some bone heads that were hafted to "slip-in" fore-shafts (designed to come off of the arrow or spear). Just a thought because it looks like it sure wouldn't come off it's leash if stuck into fish.

It's a resharpened to near exhaustion blade, probably a knife form. The flanges were formed after many resharpenings because this part of the blade was probably covered by hafting material.

First off, YES....that definitely is a point.  But like others have said, it looks resharpened to exhaustion.  It's probably middle archaic, so your looking at anywhere from 2,000 to 6,000 years old.

That could be a Morrow Mountain, a Pickwick or a Savanah River/Appalachian.  I think it was sharpened to discard stage.  Bill

Very cool!  Career changer myself and going from Wildlife Management to Biology Teacher. Will be certified in about two weeks. I think the hobbies really engage the students!
