Gobbler down (pics) fyi shotgun
« on: April 05, 2010, 10:46:00 am »
Not with a bow but got a turkey with SG today. Had no luck Saturday bow hunting. A big thunderstorm came in and I was pretty uneasy. I knew where the birds were roosting so I waited and when they came out they went to the adjacent property and off the other way. I packed it in since I was drenched.
Easter with the family.

This morning I went back and set up two hen decoys and a tom. I got a gobble in the trees about 100 yards to my rear. I was in a big cow pasture. Finally, two hens landed about 100 yards past my decoys. The tom followed. He immediately began strutting. They hens began walking away from me up the hill. The tom was torn. He'd give me a look then the two hens. After about 30 min. three more toms landed on top of the hill and began strutting. The two hens and the tom ran up to the fence, turned 90 degrees and ran down the fence to the gate, passed through the gap at the gate then ran to the other three toms. Then began strutting again.

Once they were out of sight I picked up and went way around the hill. I knew I might be able to use the terrain to get close. I eased up the hill until I saw a tail fan then began crawling. When I got down on all fours the cows came running. They didn't know what I was doing and surrounded me. I used them to crawl forward. I had to move about 250 yards crawling. Once I got close I eased up and saw a tail fan. I then belly crawled up to about 35 yards and raised, picked one out and popped him.

21 lbs. Beard 8 1/4" spurs - 1 1/8"

Sweet!, Jimmy. That's a big bird. Jesse and I got soaked to the bone Saturday morning, also.
