using hog/deer toe nails for tips?
« on: April 01, 2010, 08:20:48 pm »
Hey All, I had been saving toe nails from some kills in order to use them on a bow...I thought they might make decent tip overlays.  But now I am having a hard time figuring out how to work with the toenails to create a tip overlay.  Anyone else ever use a toenail on their bows?  How did you cut it/machine it to mate it with the bow?  TIA, paulc

I just saw them as flat as I can and put um on a belt sander. Be sure to degrease good, they are kind of like using bone,a little oily sometimes. :)

Yeah, make sure you degrease the glue side like Pappy said and you'll be fine. I use hooves for nock overlays and strike plates.

I did it once and liked the results.  Just used a hacksaw, then hand files.

I will let you know how it works for me...not sure about getting it to stick to my bamboo backing
