the only red oak I ever built blew up right out of the fades, course I think that was the second bow I ever built and the tiller was most likely to blame. Didn't slow me down a bit though - I started cuttin down osage and hick trees ;D.

I've broken half the bows I've tried to make. I'm 'let down' every time, then once the astonishment/sadness/anger/depression emotions subside, I jump back on the shaving horse!  ;D

That's the spirit! Deerhide works just fine - I've even used an old cotton Tshirt for backing and still goin strong.

Good, quick backings are silk, linen and burlap. They can add that extra insurance for your first few. Info on my site. Jawge

Hey Jawge,
I'm always on your site. love it, lots of info!
But what do you think about leather (deer hide, etc...) for backing?
