When cutting out an arrow shelf how tall is your sight window?

I go up around an inch before I start to taper back out to width. You want to minimize contact between the feather on top of the arrow and the bow.
Everything happens for a reason, sometimes the reason is you made a bad decision.

So from where the shelf is back to full width of the bow it's probably 2 1/2" to 3"?

Is there any history(evidence) to a cut-out shelf on a primitive bow , or is this a modern technique to get more center shot ?

I agree with not cutting shelves - shooting offhand just feels natural.  Not too concerned with whether they're primitive or not...  Just can't see myself making bows with them  :-\

Thanks for the replies guys.  Not really worried about primitive or not either and surely don't care if they are historically accurate, especially when I'm doing them on Reflex Deflex BBI's...LOL ::).  If they were my own bows I wouldn't go through the trouble just from the sheer fact that I'm impatient and I could probably completely tiller a whole nother bow in the time it will take me to shape the handle and cutout, but I have a few people that would like a cut out on their bow...trying to oblige them  ;D
