im so cheap
« on: March 14, 2010, 01:14:09 am »
im so cheap,or so i have been told, that i dont like wasting my material.
this is partly why i liked slabbed material, less waste
although i do really like working with spalls.
well i like to warm my knapping muscles up wheni start a session
so i usually grab a piece of whatever jsut to beat on and make some flakes untill i get my groove
well i week or two back when i got box of mixed material from jesse i found a spall in there that was mostly all cortex
so grabbed that to use as my warm up,i snapped it in half (on purpose) and went to town on one half
i was really surprised at how ell it turned out considering it was more cortex than rock
it actually knapped quite well too,and took a decent edge

heres a pic of my waste not want not point  ;D

thanks for peeking

nice. i really dig cortex points. some of the cortex knapps better than the chert itself.

It's Georgetown, that's why. I've made some nice points out of the cortex. By the way, that is a nice point you made, Tim.

Is it Georgetown or some of that Ky stuff? Turned out nice either way!

That's some of your Georgetown, Paul. Spot that stuff a mile away. I made a turkey tail out of it that is almost identical to Tim's.

Yep!   I say that because a lot of that Ky blue I picked up last weekend has a thick cortex that will work pretty good.  One of the last pine trees I made had a cortex tip on it.  I think the rock is too dark for G-town. :-\

I'm leaning toward that Ky stuff. It could go either way but is a little dark for Gtown that close to the cortex and the bark looks a little different besides. Mail it to me and I'll inspect it a little closer ;D.
