These are antler base buttons I will use on another project. Works the same as the osage buttons but these are smaller for a smaller application.

Thanks for posting all that Pat, it was very informative, and looks proper 'mountain man' styled.  It is a nice way to have adjustment and attachment with a neat and tidy appearance.  I will try to use it in my next piece of leatherwork.
