Arrow Weed
« on: March 08, 2010, 12:46:02 am »
I'm going to Yuma next saturday for my God son's baptism.  His Dad says there is a TON of arrow weed in the area.  So I was thinking I could cut a truckload while I'm down there.  Has anyone used arrow weed?  Any tips or tricks to selecting it?  What diameter should I look for?  Does it shrink much after drying?  Thanks for any help.

Also if anyone might be interested in getting some let me know before Saturday and I will cut extra.

Hey NTD I live down in sothern cali where arroe weed grows rampant. Im sure it will work for arrows however it is not the best. I heard it wasnt used for arrows at all. It i pretty straight but its kinda fragile. I dont recall having any succesful atempts. I will however recomend that you cut salt cedar it also grows in the same areas. Salt cedar aka tamarisk is exellent, I cannot emphazise enough, it is very durable and grows straight. If you do get the arrow weed however let us know how it turns out, im interested in seeing if you cna make reasonable arras.

Wouldn't that be just like some academic to find some straight growing shoot and just assume that the natives MUST have used it for arrows...LOL.  I will cut some and see what happens.  I will report my results here.  I actually bought some a couple months ago from the local native plant society...It's growing in a pot in my front yard right now.
