Made a new bopper
« on: February 21, 2010, 07:44:26 pm »
Great weather here in Alabama today, and what a day to be outside. Added a linen backing to my grandsons little pecan bow that is being built, so while the glue was drying, made this lead filled copper bopper. Tried it out on my last piece of chert. Not the greatest point, but better than usual for me, as I usually break them before they get this far.

Looks like it works just fine.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intentions of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body. But rather to slide in sideways, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming....WOW WHAT A RIDE!!

Warhawk, I made the handle from Red Oak. The one inch copper end cap, was slipped over the peen end of a ballpeen hammer, and tapped to get the shape. Melted lead in it, little over half full. Then dropped a piece of hot melt glue on top of the lead. As soon as the hotmelt was liquid, I set the handle. Quenched it in water, and that was it. The copper end cap came from a plumbing supply store.

Nice point. I made some boppers like that years ago and found out they didn't like Pedernales rocks, have since moved to solid copper.

Knap, don't know if I will be in Alabama in two weeks. Taking my Grandson to Tannehill this Saturday though. Bill Skinner will be there breaking rock, I believe.

I will be there.  I've got a bucket of coastal plains spalls and large flakes.  The creeks are up but I managed to get a couple of chunks of Talahatta.  I'm looking forward to tomorrow.  Bill
