ya never know?

Farmer called me and said he had a couple big "hedge logs" in his yard that were in his way. Asked if I would have some interest? Duhhh!  :)

I loaded my stuff and headed over there. This is what I found.

They have been laying there for a year,bug littered,bark slipping, checked out perty bad. The one on the right had a big catface all the way around it,I figure it was from wire.The one on the left showed some promise,so I looked it over well and cut the but end off. I was real surprised to see the sap running out!  Center looked perty bad also, but I figured I could get a few decent staves from the other parts.

I went to work with the wedges,passed out a couple times,wollered in the snow and by the time I finished..the mud, but managed to quarter the log and get it home. Much work, as I soon found that  it had some issues....GOOD issues!.

Bugs got down perty deep in a few of them, but the belly splits are real nice, amazingly clean backs. I got 19 staves. Really wet so they will hang out in the carport for a while.

I liked the part about passing out a couple times.   I've made lots of firewood, when i was younger and in condition, and was always amazed that a six pound maul and two steel wedges could wear me down so easy!!   Glad to know it's not just me. 

Good looking wood.   Lots of room in my carport if you fill yours up.

I was 10 years old before I realized my name wasn't "get wood", Seemed I always had a 6# maul in my hand. Used to not bother me....

Now?

Well I'm hurtin this morn. :'( Funny thing though,I never seem to hurt when I'm building bows. ;)

Very cool loking pieces...hope they make you some bows.

 Made me think if a person can tell if a log is going to give snakey staves before it is cut and split and if so what do you look for. I can see twist in the bark of trees but snakey? ???

Gives me Osage fever, just seeing that stash. Hope to get a couple Osage Staves myself, next week at Tannehill.

lowell, it sometimes can be seen, but most times not. The bark was slipping on these so it was easy to see that there was some snake present.

Most snake wood I have cut was from those long sweeping overhanging limbs that lay out on the side of the rows.
