Joe I just happened to have that short one laying on the floor,I usuall cut them to what ever length I want but sometimes leave the full length,I think the light sand papper in between is what helps hold them in place,the other key is on the grinding wheel in the drill press,if you notice their is a wheel at the bottom that keeps you from grinding it to much, it rides against the jig as you sand the feather ,not sure how you can make that part but keep in mind that it is there as a stop as you grind.
This is a little slower than the fletching clamp and belt sander but is much more accurate as far as keeping the angles right and also the quill thickness.
Brian maybe Jon will chim in,he bought it for me at a sale close by,that is all I know about it other than it seems to be very good steel and is very cool to look at.
