The bow was at 8%, just a little wetter than I normally tiller Hickory to.

i never use a meter.i just figured by the looks of mine that it was because it was to dry

I don't use a mositure either, just a humidity ga. with a temp calculation over time, EMC.

I have made several bows from that same tree. First issue that I had with it not really understanding the term you are using.

Jawage,
The handle was working a little on this bow, could have been longer but have made them much shorter with no issues.

That sure is the way to do it if your gonna break one 8)  I'm surprised hickory did that to you though.  I got away with carving a turtle in the center-back of one of mine.
