January 29-31, third annual GATOR-KNAP ’10 Prehistoric Technology Show. Where: Stephen Foster State Folk Culture Center State Park in White Springs, Florida. Admission= $4 per vehicle. The Stephen Foster State Folk Culture Center in collaboration with the Osceola National Forest would like to extend an invitation for the 3rd annual Gator-Knap to be held January 29-31. The event will be an educational experience geared at bringing together professional and a vocational archaeologists, and all those interested in prehistoric technologies. Demonstrations and classes in technologies such as flint knapping, ceramics, cordage, and carving of stone, shell, bone, and wood will be held at the scenic Stephen Foster State Folk Culture Center along the banks of the Suwannee River. Come and teach, learn, or just crack some rock! Featured Speakers: Kenneth E. Sassaman, Hyatt and Cici Brown Professor of Florida Archaeology, University of Florida. Archaeological Insights on the Ancient Shellworks of the St. Johns River, Northeast Florida . Second Speaker TBA. ISAC Atlatl competition. Flint knapping competition. Late night knapping sessions for campers. Free dry camping with access to bathing/restroom facilities for registered knap-in vendors and participants (no reservations needed). http://www.floridastateparks.org/stephenfosterFeb. 12-14, 3rd annual Ochlockonee River Stone Age and Primitive Arts Festival This event will be held two weeks after the Gator Knap-in held in White Springs, Florida and a week before the Withlacoochee Knap-in held near Dade City, Florida. This will give out of state travelers an opportunity to attend three events in three weeks. We had 2400 visitors come to our 2nd annual event in 2009. This was up from 1595 from the event held in 2008. This is very good numbers considering our remote location and the fact that this was only the second year that the event has been held. The park holds this event to showcase primitive and stone age art forms from around the world and to educate the public about the world’s rich prehistory. This event is dedicated to stone age technologies and the park will not allow any artwork that does not fit the theme to be displayed. Please plan on displaying high quality hand made arts, no plastics or trinkets. Vendors will be allowed to sell their art work and knapping supplies. No original artifacts of antiquity can be sold, reproductions only please. The park has a 30 site campground for RV or tent camping. The cost for camping in the regular campground is $19.62 a night. The campground reservations for the 2009 event were booked up two months in advance. If you plan on camping in our campground please make your reservations as soon as possible by calling Reserve America at 1800-326-3521. The park provides a primitive camping area for vendors near the event area. There is not a charge to camp in this area. For those of you who wish to stay in motels there are three within a reasonable distant of the park. The knapin is held in conjunction with the Red White and Blue muzzleloading rendezvous. The event includes numerous muzzleloaders, campers, visitors and trade tents. There will be plenty of folks available to watch knappers. No charge for trade blanket to sell your wares. June 4 - 6. Devil's Hole Knap-in. Pleasant ridge park, FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, IL. Join us for 3 days of fun in the beautiful and quiet. This knap-in is the oldest in the Midwest and we’ll be celebrating our 30th consecutive year. Free primitive camping is available on-site (no ground fires) and there are dozens of restaurants and motels nearby. There will be a free attendance prize drawing on Saturday, at 2:00 PM, and it will feature 60 to 70 donated prizes. Evening slide/lecture programs will be presented on Friday and Saturday, so bring a chair. Musicians, bring your instruments. This year, we will be charging a $5.00, per family, fee to cover pavilion rental, postage, and other expenses. Do not arrive on Sunday as everyone will be heading for home before noon. At 9:00 AM, Sunday morning, Larry will host a guided tour of Cahokia Mounds. Note: Pleasant Ridge Rd. is under construction. The road has barricades that say the road is not through.
