Interesting source of flint I found in eastern N.C.

I was doing my best to get some basic tools together to try my hand at knapping. I managed to get a couple of rocks to use as hammerstones and also put together a bopper. I was still in need of rock and was cosidering ordering some. That is when I remembered that some of the ballast stones (used to weight down ships during ealier times) were flint. So I went down to the river and found a few to try  to do some purcussion work. The ones I found were black or tan in color. Has anybody here had a chance to try knapping this material? I'm not sure where this material originated as the town I live in is the second oldest in N.C.

I've knapped a little ballast flint. Some of it is really good stuff, and some of it is nasty and tough. Most I've seen is black or gray English flint, that tan could be French. A lot of it I've seen is freeze-fractured really bad, but some isn't. Most of the NC coast was originally settled by the English, with a colony of Swiss founding New Bern. Can you post some pics?
