Grain on Oak question

Hi!
On Oak there are dark lines thats not growthrings. I wonder if they mark or follow the grain?
In the pic you can see a growthring surface forming a
c
and the dark lines horizontal. When Oak checks the cracks follow the dark lines in my experience. Thats why I suspect the dark lines mark the grain.

Those are rays in the wood, they are very pronounced on oak. And yep, they pretty much follow the grain.
