Some types of cane are considerably better than others, but as stringstretcher said, most types of cane or bamboo will make decent arrows as long as they have good wall thickness and are the right diameter. Be sure to avoid first-year shoots, as they are too thin and flabby to make good shafts. My favorite types I have used are the native river, switch, and hill canes (have to be picky selecting shoots, though with the river cane); Japanese arrow bamboo,; and Sasa bamboo.
