Here's a little info:

christiananswers.net/dictionary/sling.html

Interesting they say that a good slinger could sling a rock as far and accurate as a good archer   :P

I know a lot of people here love the primitive/traditional stuff but I highly suggest for a traditional sling...use a synthetic.  There's nothing like smacking someone in the face with a 2oz rock becuase your leather lacing/sinew/hemp/etc cables gave out.  I've been on both sides of that story, by the way.  I used to be quite a shot with a sling.

Simple construction, though...best thing is take a flat piece of round leather, about 4" in diameter.  Put a dent in the middle...I would get it wet and use a ball hammer to get a good 1/2" deep dent in the leather.  Ad your ties and use smooth stones.  Operation is far more difficult than construction.  Make sure you have a lot of room all around when you practice...and try not to let go of both strings.

When I make one I use a piece of deer leather about 3" long by 2" wide for a pouch.

Then punch 2 holes per side in the tips of the teardropped shaped pouch.

Then take 2 strips of deer leather the length of your cubit (length from elbow to fingertips) and tie a knot on the end of one and a loop on the other, that is big enough to get your index finger through and tie the strips to the pouch.

As for opperating it put your index finger through the loop and grasp the knot between your thumb and forefinger and place a mid sized pebble in the pouch and twirl above your head and release the knot end.

Have fun! ;)

Everything you wanted to know about real slings.  This site is to slings, what PA is to Archery.  I've made and use the woven pouch paracord sling - works really well, simple to make, inexpensive...

Biggest thing is keeping your strings from twisting.

Make your string with the loop shorter than the other.  Loop it around your middle finger.  Hold your other strings between your thumb and index.  This will keep your strings from twisting.

Actual technique varies.  I use a 24" sling and spin it about 60rpm until launch.  The last full rotation I pick it up and it clocks between 120 and 140rpm.  Launching at this speed I have to open my hand at about 120* from 12-o'clock.  Slower rotations will leave you opening later, fast you will need to open sooner.

Just like archery, it takes practice, practice, and more practice.

David most likely made his sling from braided cordage like this one
