Plain ol osage- Hot Rod & Hawkeye
« on: December 20, 2009, 10:46:01 am »
My sunday school teacher wanted a primitive bow for his son.  After he shot my osage longbow he want one for his son.  He brought me a 7' long straight as an arrow log from a tree on his land.  this was back on Oct 1 so i had 3 months to strip em down and dry the wood enough for a bow.  The rough out staves spend 2 weeks with the bark & sapwood removed inside my house, then 4 weeks in my hot box on 100 degrees.  I was amazed they dried out so well with just a few vertical cracks in the belly, which disappeared while tillering.   I haven't had any straight osage in so long, it was an absolute pleasure to work on such good osage!  anyway of course i made the father & son combo, so here they are "Hawkeye & Hot Rod".   hawkeye is 63" 52# @ 27" with a large knot in the top limb which gave it its name.  Hot Rod only had a few knot and used so little wood to make weight, with 3" of reflex heated in.  Its light mass made for a fast bow and a pleasure to shoot.  these will be given at christmas with surprise for both father and son, as the father has picked up the one he knows about already and i will give the one for him to his wife before christmas day. I also sent a bunch of my old PA magazines with him since they are new to primitive archery.  anyway here are a few pics.

guys i say "plain ol" partly because i have seen so many great bows of elm, bamboo, horn bows etc (its a long list), and partly because plain old osage with will make a super bow anytime.    anyway here is the full draw pic on Hawkeye, i didn't get one on hot rod.  the top limb could be better, but not bad for the 3 knots in it.
