Have you thought of a falce hornbow with a tempered bamboo belly maple core and sinew back or you could do one with a bamboo back as well.

Yep, Hickory backed Osage will do the job just fine. Go for a bit of a Holmgaard (as already mentioned) and it'll still be able to shoot well (stiff tips and all).
Take your time in tillering.
