Hickory backed Hickory...Creaky Bow finished!
« on: November 16, 2009, 10:39:04 pm »
Here is the hickory backed hickory bow that I was asking about how to keep the handle from creaking, I finally finished it.  It is 63" NtN/52lbs @ 28" It shoots pretty fast for a hickory bow,  I didn't decorate this one as much as I do my other bows or narrow the tips as much (they are around 3/8" with red oak overlays) because I wanted a bow that I could drag through the woods and be rough with and not have to worry as much about its stability.  Basically wanted a "go to" bow.  i chose hickory for this because it is dang near impossible to break (at least for me).
I used ebony stain followed by 7 coats of tru oil, havent decided if i wanna use the old satin polly on it to knock down some of the shine, guess I will if i decide to hunt with it.   Also this bow only took like a quarter inch of string follow (or whatever you youngsters are calling it nowadays  :P )  But I did start with like 2 inches of heat gun-induced reflex. So I guess it took 2 and a quarter inches of set.  Whaddaya think?   Thanks again to Jawge and PatB, they are the reason this bow still has a handle attached to it.  Thanks for looking!   :)  :) -josh

That is a really great bow.  I am really partial to a bow that follows the string a tiny bit.  They seem to shoot noticeably better for me.

Nice tiller!

Do you think you got extra speed from the glue line or was it just extra work?

thanks every one!!  :)

TBod, I backed with Hickory just to see if I could do a bow with a backing strip.  It was my first attempt at gluing a bow together.  So it was just extra work but i figured it would be a good place to start.  My other bow I did, the R/D  hickory backed ipe bow was the first one I glued up wit the reflex-deflex profile so I was just basically practicing for that one.   thanks for looking!   -josh   :)

Very nice looking spread on that bow, Josh. You know, that could be the longest 28''draw in the world.

Shoots good for Hickory, huh? What shoots better?  ;D

thanks rick and GMC!!!

this is the best bow I have ever made from hickory GMC, but my osage character bow I built still outshoots it a little bit.  But outta all the hickory I have used this one definitely is the best so far!  I love hickory, it just dulls the heck outta my tools so much faster than any other bow wood I have tried so far.  but for unbreakability, I would choose hickory over any other hands down.  thanks again guys!   :)  -josh
