Broke another one...
« on: November 09, 2009, 10:58:51 pm »
So before I started on my Ipe and Boo stack I decided to make one more red oak board bow but with a stiff handle so I could get the practice doing that style before playing with the ipe.  I ended up having the same dang thing happen as did in the last red oak board shown here http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,15254.msg210583.html#msg210583

It broke exactly the same way and at about the same distance of draw, 14".  So I think I have a dry wood problem and I'm a little nervous to start on the BBI's as I don't want them exploding unless it's my fault.  Has anyone built a Bow wood Humidor?  What can I do to make sure my Ipe and any future wood is at a safe MC without buying a meter?

Ipe in very low humidity - hmm.  People may raise an eyebrow but, you could shower with it? ;D ;)  Kidding aside - maybe the steam would help.  Dunno.  I would definitely overbuild the bow and keep a lower draw weight.

I have found by keeping a 5 gallon bucket of water in my shop I can keep the humidity pretty stable. I have dry wood problems too. I think you can also make a hot box, and keep wet rags in it to get MC up in a stave.

Maybe your handle area is too stiff? Try getting it bending closer to the handle or bending in the handle a little.
