So I finished my first bow. It is hickory and is 71 inches ntn and around 55 @ 28. Since its my first one I built it extra long and backed it with linen even thought be back was not violated. The thickness is he same all the way up the limbs and is tillered just from the width taper.
I did not like the look of the bone white hickory sapwood and the gray linen, and i did not have any stain so i just painted the bow. I then finished it with 12 coats of spar varnish.
The bottom limb started with 1 inch deflex so it makes the top limb look stiffer.
Now its ive got to start planing my new one
hope the picture turn out ok, they are from my phone.

That may be the best first attempt that I've seen. Did you scrape the back of the bow? Just curious, it does appear to be rather flat and not rolling as most Hickory staves that I've seen (just an observation). Stain is a challenge with Hickory. I've had good results using Shellac. Actually I think Shellac was made for Hickory
. Its a pain to apply but don't build it up so much to reduce the shine and then finish with tung oil. The downside is repairs, that's a pain.
Best of luck on the next one.

Thank you.
GMC, I did not scrape the back at all, I just left the cambium in the low spots on the back. I was afraid of sanding through the thin ring when i tried to get rid of the cambium in the low spots so i just left it there.

That is great, your first bow, and it works. My first three exploded, good job. I remember how great it was to shoot an arrow out of the first bow I made (that worked). I bet you make more. For stain on hickory shoe leather dye works well.
