hey guys found two four foot by four foot boulders of this stuff with pieces all around . think im going back tom. with my sludge hammer . just curious if this is coastal plains flint . im in southwest GA near alabama and florida line

Looks like costal plains to me, and you are in the right area.  It will work raw but works better if heat treated.  Bill

yup...looks like coastal plains chert to me.  Cook it, slowly bringing the temp up to about 400-450 degrees and it should glass up nicely

yea i'd say its coastal too... i would not use a sludge hammer if you can help it.. A sludge hammer will cone it up bad.

 I don't know about all this slow cooking stuff billy.. i have cooked allot of rock and for the most part i never exceed the max timp but i cook it fast.. I'll set the oven to 250* let it sit for 1hr then ramp it up 50* an hr let it set at max timp for 5-8 hrs then i just tern it off.. I've cooked coastal , coral , horse creek, TX flint , Kay co. , alabats , and some others like this with no problems.

 I put mine in and turn it up to 450 and go to bed. I turn it off in the morning when I go to work and let it cool down all day.

thanks for the ID and cooking info , leapingbare im not sure i can get it with out the hammer bout 20 miles from the house and the rocks are really four foot wide four foot high and bout three foot thick , i have a frontend loader but nowhere close to the rock. ill post pics of the boulders tom.  thanks again for the info.. may have some rock for anyone interested in coastal

  If you gatta use the hammer try to make sure your plat forms are good so you want have to hit it more then once for each spall.

im gonna try to knock some three and four pound chunks loose, there are a few thirty or forty pound boulders nearby ill get them too

Yep. that's Coastal. I collected alot from that area. The clearer stuff will cook at @ 400 degress but the other is gonna need alot more heat
