pop ash selfy- lotsa pics
« on: October 19, 2009, 08:23:03 pm »
i put together a really really sweet selfbow out of Pop ash that i got when i lived in Florida. i had the stave for 3 years and was saving it for something special...i think this qualifies!  its 62" long and 59# @ 26". Pop ash is a very southern version of white ash, and its really good wood but was hard for me to find.
i tempered the belly wood for extra performance, gave it a bull hide grip and tip overlays of IPE.  its really shoots nice. very happy with the way it turned out. what do you think of this one? - Ryan

Nice bow Ryan! I've been eyeing an ash tree for a couple years now.... may just have to sharpen up the chainsaw. :)

You are cranking them out, Ryan. That bow looks like it will sling them out there. What does Pop Ash look like? I never heard of it down here.

thanks guys.
i dont know the botanical name for it  but the leaves are arranged just like any other ash except the leave are very round. they normally dont grow very large and they are primarily found around water sometime growing right out of the water.  i think in the 'glades they do grow pretty large---------  here is a picture of them actually with the name

Dead on tiller on this one. I'll bet it is indeed a great shooter. Bookmarked for Self BOM fun, too.
