I go a half an inch down from the tip then file it down from there at a forty five degree angle.

I usually do the same, half-inch on the back and 3/4" on the belly side. You can put them an inch from the tip, too if you want more room for using a stringer or something, but much more than an inch is just dead weight on the end of the limbs.
