I made this bbi recurve recently. 2 ipé lams, wich are really thin (like 1/8") will take the bend without breaking. My lams were a little thicker, so I glued a less-severe recurve in it, and when it was finished I had sanded away almost one whole lam. 2 lams, tapering from 3/16" to 1/8" would be ideal, and with a thin boo backing it would be ready to string once it comes off the form.

Your dry southern Arizona climate is great for hickory, and hickory bends pretty easy. Just a thought.
Everything happens for a reason, sometimes the reason is you made a bad decision.
