Selfbow Birthday Gift
« on: September 24, 2009, 09:31:10 pm »
Howdy yall,

Here is bow that I started probably 3 months ago, for my brother-in-law's birthday and gave it to him this evening.  I'm happy with how it turned out.  It follows the dimensions for the Osage flatbow in TBB1 but is made of hickory.  I heat treated it several times through also making sure to care for the wood in the humidity down here.  It worked.  This bow which I gave 2 inches of reflex to start tillering is holding just short of about 1" of follow now after being shot and strung frequently for the past month.  I'm pleased with that.  So 67" long and 65#@28".  Gave it 3 coats of Tung oil and we'll be trying to get ourselves some snakeskins.  Shoots like a rocket  and groups consistently at 20-25 yards.
Now it's time for us to fill the freezers...

I do like giving bows for gifts.

Thanks for lookin.

Parnell

Nice bow,he should like that. Just wondered if you cut the nocks all the way around the back, picture looks like you did.It will probably be OK but I never do that unless I put on tip
overlays. You don't want to violate the grain on the back. Tiller looks good. :)

I'd like to get a birthday bow myself!  Pappy, it does look like it went all the way through on the back.  There is a small area that it didn't.  The hickory bows I've been using seem to be fine doing this with but, still, I haven't followed a ring on a stave yet.  Don't have the wood!  Someday!

Cool bow. I really like the first picture. Looks like it should be in a magazine. Hmmm now where to find a magazine that would want a picture of a selfbow.

Looks like a good one, he should be happy with it. Hickory makes a great bow if you can keep it dry.

Can't think of a nicer b-day present! Is it from a stave or a board?

It was a board.  Our dry weather is coming soon.  It'll be 6-7 months of no rain and he'll be able to use it like mad.  I'll have to make him a bamboo backed Ipe for the wet weather!
