chipmunk and squirrel?
« on: September 13, 2009, 01:38:36 am »
i just got a english longbow from woodbows that is 27# at 28", and was wondering if that is enough to kill a chipmunk or squirrel from about 10 yards with those youth target points that aren't sharp but just pointed a bit?yes, no, unwise to try?

27# should be enough on very small critters like that
check your local hunting laws to make sure it s of legal hunting weight first

why would ya shoot a chipmunk?
aint nothing to eat on them.
i always wanted a harley, untill it became the "thing to ride"
i ride because i love to,not to be part of the crowd

HEy young,

I'd use a broadhead type of point for squirrels....I've had miserable luck with blunts on squirrels. I hit a big fat Iowa squirrel in the chest with a rubber blunt shot from my 52 lb longbow and the damn thing ran off!  And that was at about 14 feet.  I've also hit several other squirrels with blunts and never killed one.  I switched to stone points and my kill percentage immediately jumped to almost 100%.  Your bow would kill a squirrel, but I would definitely use broadheads of either metal or stone cause squirrels are tough unless you shoot them in the head....

from bout ten yards you should be good. aim for the front end of the squirl if you can.

as far as cookin it, deffinently skin and gut it, cut off the feet and head, make sure its REALLY CLEAN. then cook it however you preffer.

best of luck to you man.
lets just shoot it

pretty much. i usually make a cut accross the  back and work my fingers in under the skin on either side of the cut and pull, one side toward the tail and the other toward his head. like pullin a little shirt and little pants off.

They will be back for free food!  ;)
A good cheap point for small game is a "nutter"; a hex nut threaded on the tapered end of the arrow. Get a nut big enough so you will have at least 1/2" of the taper is sticking out beyond the nut. I super glue the wood tip and the nut after threading it on the shaft. The nut adds the shock and the pointed tip adds the penetration.
I shot a squirrel a few years ago with a Judo point. The squirrel was on a large white oak about head high. I hit him dead center of the back from 10 yards with a 55# bow and it ran up the tree never to be seen again.  ???  Squirrels are tough critters and a bit of penetration is what it takes to kill them.

now i just want to eat one and i have abandoned my bow and switched to snares and bb guns, but my bow is still there if they get close enough.and i got bored and decapitated a chickadee with a nice clean shot of my bow, then cooked it and gave it to my dog.

They say armadiller is pretty good too south of the border. Course it ain't but a great big possum with a shell.
