how does everyone layout string grooves

just wandering I eyeball mine but sometimes they are crooked, and what angle do you think they are cut in?

I put tip overlays on all my bows and cut only the groove across the back first. When I get the bow to normal brace I mark the sides like this.



Even with this marking method they may not match perfectly on the belly  so I cut with a narrow round file first and fine tune them to be right with a larger chainsaw file.

I kinda like Eric's method, the angle will change of course with bow length.

I come off the tip what ever I want ,usually about 1 inch mark it, then go down 1/2 more and mark
it  , connect the lines I would say abot a 45. I always do the overlays last,once the bow is tillered and shooting, don't want to do any extra work till I know it's a shooter,lazy I guess.

i measure down bout 1/2 inch across back and on belly go down bout 3/4 connect lines and cut only my sides out not the back.

I use segment of my finger to mark distance from tip.
If I have overlay, I cut across top first then do one side at time, too lazy to mark.
Though! I think Eric's method is top of cool! I never thought of this, will need to try as it seems more consistent.

For bow with no overlay, just eyeball, any mess up is a character

I measure 3/4" on the back and 1-1/4" on the belly and connect the lines. Cut the groove where the outer edge of the file is even with the line.

just 45 degree angles marked with a small combination square, about 5/8" from the end of the bow

With overlays, it's easier to just cut a groove on the back and make the tips really thin.

I measure down 1/2, draw a line, 3/4 and draw a line. I draw a diagonal and cut the nock. I do the same on the other side but actually look at the first groove to match'em up. Jawge

I do the same as George and Steve but I go 3/4" then 1" and connect the lines.  If I have doubts about either the cut of the nock or the angle, like Eric, I will trace out the string on a braced bow.

  I square and file the groove across the top. Then see where the string lines up when strung. Then I cut and file the sides in till it is all smooth. If the string doesn't line up in the center of the belly, I refile the grooves till it shifts over. then refile the Tips till they are even.
