Radius-
  In the Mountain Man era it was common for a trapper or a hunter to carry your most basic posessions in a small bag called a possibles bag,
Ammunition,knives, food, firestarter etc might be carried in a simple bag or purse carried on the shoulder

Radius, the only difference in a possibles bag and a purse is in the attitude!  ;D

In the era those were common, pants didn't generally have pockets, so they kind of held everything that you would carry in your pockets.
