My new Tri-lam O/O/H is shooting (lots of pics)
« on: July 25, 2009, 10:05:31 pm »
Here are the finished pics of the O/O/H bow.  This one was begun in
another thread, TWO LAMINATED BOWS BEGUN or someting like that.  It is
60-inches overall length,, two lams of osage and the back is hickory.
Glued with WeldWood (tm).    It weighs 414-grams and pulls 49# at 24"
measured with a stick and a bathroom scale.   My regular bow test
scale is taking a vacation I guess, I can't find it anyplace.  The
finish is a dilute lye solution for color, then washed off and dried
and tung-oil, three coats.  String is 16-strands of B-50.  If I was archer enough this one would drive 16-penny nails in oak......hits hard and fast.  Thanks to you experts who advised me during the making.  Like ElDestructo says, "A little osage goes a long way".

A finished nock:

A view of the lams:

Strung, leaning on the shed:

This Geezer was walking by and helped me out with this full draw pic.   I gave him a cup of coffee and a donut.

The bow is in the violin shop, and I'm home, so I Photoshopped the pic.   Is this better ElDestructo?

Mullet, mix plain old lye with water.....not too strong.   It will age cherry, or oak or mahogany......and osage.....and most other woods, making them bloom with color which is IN THE WOOD not ON THE WOOD.......Wear latex gloves, and EYE PROTECTION!!!....and swab on with a scrap of cloth, and then throw it out.  rince with water, or water with a little vinegar, then plain water, dry it well, and then dress down the fuzz with 0000-steel wool.

Great lookin bow. Do you plan to add a coat of wax to the bow? I've found tongue oil doesn't protect too well from moisture.

Dano, I like paste wax and have some i trust.  I'll let the tung oil get really good and oxydized and then rub on a couple coats of wax.

guys I drew these bows yesterday and they have some power in those limbs, smooth drawing but you could tell it was over 55 pounds on one of them, excelent craftsmanship

i got to draw that one before it had the stain on it.  ;D

those are some of the sweetest wood bows i have ever seen. still need to get around to shooting them though.

Mr. Kieth, i had some cherry shafts that i came by to get you to do the lye trick on, but you was gone, so i did em with some finish i had at home. came out nice, but i already broke 3 of them.

anyhow, great work. glad you finally made some more lam bows.
lets just shoot it
