First Finished Self-Bow, Self-Osage ELB
« on: June 26, 2009, 04:20:17 pm »
Hi All,

Finished my first self-bow a couple of weeks ago, thought I'd share some pics of it here. It's self-Osage, quite a tricky stave to work on with some propeller twist and an uneven bend to the limbs which made tillering "interesting" shall we say. There's also a large knot just above the handle, wasn't really sure how to deal with it, so I left a lot of wood around it which has resulted in that section of the bow being stiff, there was a small splinter coming up on the belly next to the know, so I wrapped it with artificial sinew (would normally have used thread but thought the colour of the artificial sinew would go well with the Osage) and did a matching wrap on the other side of the knot, it's held up fine.

It's 73" ntn, haven't had it weighed properly but I'd say 65#@30" or very close to that, with lots of early draw weight. It has almost no stringfollow. I've fitted it with horn nocks and finished it with Rustins plastic coating, which gives a lovely finish. Overall I'm very happy with how it came out, especially since it's my first self-bow. Here's some pics...

Arrow pass, I may fit a leather grip but I'm not sure.

At full draw (took this before I varnished it)

Cheers,
Dave

Thanks guys, since I've only made laminates so far this has been a real eye opener, making self-bows is definitely more fun and challenging I'd say.

I have made a few osage ELB style bows and was very pleased with each one. You did i nice job with this bow and handled the knot well.  Handle area looks a bit stiff but if that's how you planned it and it shoots well that's all that matters.

Thanks again guys, Pat, I made this bow to bend "full compass" but did leave the handle a little stiff so it's probably more of an elliptical tiller.

You sure picked a challenge for your first one, but you did a good job on it, congratulations.
