Questions on flint
« on: June 09, 2009, 11:19:48 am »
A friend of mine found some flint online. I have made a few heads and he would like me to make some for him.

What I would like to know is, does flint need to be heat treated? I believe the flint is from Texas.

Thanks,
Bob

It just depends. Some rock works good raw, and some is almost unworkable without heat. Most is somewhere in between. I greatly prefer to work raw rock when I can, especially for hunting points or other things that will be used as opposed to just lookin' at.

I don't make heads with the intent of looking at them. Most start out as hunting heads but sometimes the rock has other idea's. I haven't attepted to hunt with stone yet but this year that will change.

Bear, most Texas rock can be worked raw.Although I have had some that I just could get to work.

If it is from a reputable seller, then they can probably tell you the type of material that you are getting.

Raw Texas rock makes some of the best hunting heads, imo. ;) Georgetown, perdanales are a couple good rocks.
