Now what can I make from this???
« on: June 06, 2009, 07:22:10 pm »
Got busy in the yard today and cut down this purple leaf sandcherry. Fairly heavy too.
Figured it would at least make overlays or riser material...of course this cuts look a bit orange from the shellac I soaked into them.  Not enough to make a bow unless I cut slats out of it and splice 'em. Maybe hickory backing??? ::)

Ought to be some good burl in that root section.

That's what I thought too MaceG! I cleaned all the dirt off and will let it dry over the summer before cutting into.

I think you might want coating on side as well, cherry like to crack badly from my experience....

Its a pretty wood, should make many nice thing from it.

FE Archer, I took your advise and glad I did...It was already splitting in the smaller limb sections, do I sealed it all. The root ball still has the bark on and the cuts sealed so should be good to go. By the fall should be ready to go I hope... MAybe Christmas.

If the wood is going to season the moisture has to have a place to escape from. If you seal the entire piece of wood, there is a chance rot will take hold and ruin the wood.

PAt, I split the largest stick first. Didn't want to seal the moisture in.

300 tip overlays and handle accents. Don't think it'll yield a good bow in any way.
