Do you have to back a Osage slpliced stave?

No, but everyone I've done, I've backed it. I think it looks better, but you can still hide the splice with a grip of some sort.

I splice almost every bow I make. I rarely use a 4" splice and often use a 3" or 3 1/2" splice because it is easier to hide completely under the leather. Because I am using thinner billets I always add a piece to the belly of the handle for more wood to shape into the handle and to add more glue surface to my splice. I use Urac and have never had a splice fail.

Here is a splice with the extra wood glued on.
