some tips for tillering to 32inch with a 71inch bow??
« on: May 28, 2009, 04:42:40 am »
hi all,

I've never been able to tiller a bow to 32 inch myself, and now I wanna try it but my bow(it's just
a stave at the moment) is only 71inch long. Im going for 80#32.
its a ash backed elm bow and the measurements will be:
at the handle 30mm wide, 27mm thick
at the tips, 14mm wide and 13mm thick

will this work? and what do I need to look out when tillering such a short bow so far??

Hey Joren

I made a 95#@32" hazel bow, wich is only 72" ntn and 1 1/2" wide. Pretty happy how this one turned out; no crysals, only 1" of set.

but 71" overall (70"ntn), 30mm wide... Goodluck ;) It's probably possible with a perfect tiller.

I would tiller it to 30" then slowly shoot in the last 2",
it is possible but as nick said perfect tiller.

I would not aim for 32". It's your choice, but with such a deep profile and so short a stave, I would not go for 32". If the backing is perfect, the glueline flawless, and the tiller exactly right, it may just work. But even then: it's ash end elm...not a yew or an elm stave, so expect at least a lot of set. But stacking can become an issue also.

Technically, if your bow has been tillered to 30", I don't believe the tiller would be off when drawn to 32". If the tiller is spot on at 30" but off at 32", then something weird is goning on.

Does the stave have any reflex? What glue did you use?

What you're wanting would be very difficult. How much experience do you have with tillering? If it was me, I'd find a more suitable stave to tiller to 32"... ie. longer. Make a nice 60-70#@30" bow from your 71" stave.

The mediaeval rule was; twice the arrow length [64"] plus one fist for a flight bow to be shot only occasiionally, and plus two fists for a bow for regular shooting. That would be 71 inches between nocks with a self bow tillered to the arc of a circle. It might work with horn tips to get the nocks 71 inches apart, or it might not.

I do have quite a lot of experience when tillering to 28inches but absolutely 0 when it comes
to tiller a bow to 32inches. so I"ve taken the advice of some of you and desided to tiller this one
to 30inches. And when done and i've glued up a stave of about 79inch im gonna make a 90#32.

I think you've made a very wise decision.
