Early this morning my friend Brandon and I were out on a spring gobbler hunt. I had my usual recurve bow with two arrows and a hip quiver and Brandon had his trusty 12 gauge shotgun. Today's weather was hot, humid and uncomfortable and the turkeys seem to be not calling in this kind of weather. Even though we didn't get a turkey, I had a good learning experience tasting wild edibles and understanding different bird calls. I also realized that the call of a woodpecker sounded very similar to a spring gobbler. We saw a hen run past us at blinding speed, a buzzard flew over our heads, deer all over the place, and even a little salamander. Heck we came across dozens of hickory trees which makes excellent bow wood and edible nuts where all over the area. Most of the nuts we found however where not edible any more so we move. Before we packed up and leave a rabbit came into my sights but the arrow missed and he took off. It was bad turkey weather because of the humidity and then the rain but I didn't mind very much; I had fun anyway.
