new cane spear
« on: April 16, 2009, 08:33:37 pm »
here is a spear i made today from river cane, i actually posted it on another site, and got it erased..lol  guess they dont appreciate spears, like we do here.   but anyways, the head is dacite, mounted on an oak foreshaft.  nothing overly fancy but i would consider this one rugged enough to hunt with.  i added some weight to the front end and the point is a bit smaller for better penetration.  its 3 1/4 long  x  2" wide.  not too thin to make it brittle, probably 3/8 - 1/2 thick. thanks for looking, i am sure it will be appreciated here with my brother stone chuckers-  Ryan

Very cool.  Do you plan on hunting with it?  Now that would be the ultimate challenge.  Nice work.

thanks guys,  yea i plan on actually trying to kill a deer with t this year...or a spear just like it any ways i am goin to make a couple til i find a design that i think is fool proof.  i actually think the trick is to hide in tall grass along a trail, with a little longer spear and thrust it into the deer rather than throw it...or stand in a tree and throw it straight down.  i think it will be a challenge for sure, and the nice thing abut huntign with a spear,  i dont expect to really get anything so there isnt any real disappointment.
no it wasnt this site huntertrapper, it was just another site that had a post about spears and i contributed with my pics, apparently its ok for other people to show their new knives, atlatl's, gigantic rifle killed boars, shotgun killed turkeys, and when i show a picture of a spear they say (lets keep it traditional)  losing a lot of respect for that site.   atleast we have different sections here for that type of thing, even though we are all pretty like minded.  this is by far my favorite site.
