1st R/D is just out of the form
« on: April 11, 2009, 09:53:01 pm »
I took my 1st attempt at a R/D out of the form yesterday; how does it look.
It is bamboo backed hickory 63: ntn. I am going after 45# @ 26".
The form dims were as follows: centre post 4", end posts 6" mid -limb post 3" 11" out from centre of bow.
I pre-tapered and cut to profile the bamboo but only pre-tapered the belly slat. I have noticed that the "low" point on the limbs is about 1 1/2" out past the low point on the form; is this normal or was there something wrong in my pre-tapering?
I have the handle section glued up as I am writing.

Never having attempted a R/D design before I am rather nervous about the tillering. I would like to get as much limb working as possible but am unsure how to judge how much each section is bending (due to R/D).

Any and all help/comments greatly appreciated.

Profile looks good! How are your glue lines? And...it looks like you cleared the shelves on clamp? :)

The clamps were on special last year, ...just couldn't resist;-) The glue lines are not bad, not perfect but I'm not unhappy with them; I only have hand tools for the prep. work.

I agree, there is certainly something about the reflex/deflex shape;  just hope that I can do it justice.
