 Has anybody ever had this problem? I cut this piece of wood back in October, '08. It has been drieing and I even started to split it. I wanted to make a bow in honor of our President, since the seed pods and nickname of this tree reminded me of him, but,,, I have a small problem. Have you guy's ever had a cut log ever start growing on you?

Yep. It isn't unusual to have wood cut at the end of the growing season sprout the following spring if it is left with the bark on. It will grow until it uses up the water in the cambium.
 I have seen quite a few Elm and HHB logs with buds popping out of the bark in spring.
  I actually once cut a HHB in mid-winter and broke the saw blade with the tree completely cut through but still vertical. Wasn't able to get back to it until the end of the year. It was in full leaf but looking a bit sickly. I guess it was able to draw water up from the cut surface where water was filling the gap.

I've seen locust fence stakes sprout while they were stacked in a pile, but that log looks pretty determined.....

I would take a few of those cuttings and try to root them, that way, if you like your bow, you can pass the bow AND the tree it came down through the family.  But hey, I just like trees, got 4 baby Grapefruit from seeds and 2 baby Jap. Maple.

I made a bow when I lived in Hawaii out of a Jacaranda sapling..I think this wood has potential..

  Hey Rich, you got me for a second. I'm talking about "Curious George" I started splitting it but it started to spiral, so I thought I'd wait till I could saw it. It would make cool Camo if you could finish it and have it still grow. Might be a little sluggish, though.

Yeah, I'd say the moisture content is still just a bit high.........

Gosh I think that stave wants to keep just being a tree.   Jacarinda?  Maybe we should call that one the catfish tree. You know how hard they try to stay alive even out of water. I'm curious how it perform and where you can get it if its good. Let us know when you work it up Eddie...   Danny

My limited experience was it wants to check and crack so I'd leave it to dry as a branch if it was me..Heck that thing wants to get up and walk away.

Maybe an appropriate name for the bow might be "Diehard"...

  Aosda, no sense in rooting it, it grows wild everywhere down here. That growth is only a week and a half old and it's starting to sprout all over the log now.

   I think that tree might be mamossa instead of jacaranda. Are the flowers purple or pink or yellow? Steve

I had that happen with a 6" dia. sassafras log with sealed ends that I stored in a cool basement. It finally quit sprouting after a couple of weeks.
