I've got the same problem; hickory is just very hard to get in the Netherlands, and very, very pricy. thanks to Jorik (darksoul) I found a good supplier of bamboo, wich may be even better in tensile strengths.

Nickf - I'm starting with bamboo now but want to eventually use only indigenous woods
Mole - bottom arrow is the one in the pic , top two are a new set of six I've just finished
