Can you feel my pain!!!
« on: March 24, 2009, 11:56:45 pm »
I just finished this bow last. I shoot it about 70-100 times last Saturday. It shot fast and sweet, and only had 9/16" of set the next day. Hickory backed Jacota, 65" ntn. Sunday, I pulled it back without an arrow.. pow! Must have pulled too far. About 50+ hours work.

Thou I consider the bow a success, the failure was do to operator error, which caused the glue backing to fail. Services will be held Friday.

so what kinda tips are those?  they look sharp

i am by no means an expert, however to me it looks like if you would have kept your hick backing strip in tact tip to tip
this probably wouldnt have happened, sorry man but like they say "if ya aint breakin them,ya aint makin them"

do like shooter said and hang it for motivation

                                                                       peace,

I feel for you ....but Tim is correct....when You sculpted the Backing like you did....you litterally made you a ticking time bomb....believe me....I did the same thing ....weeks worth of work only to have it blow up in my face....and damned near ruined an eye too boot....stuck splinters in the ceiling and curtains in the Living Room...and hit one of my two 180 gallon Aquariums....that thankfully didn't blow up too!!

I feel you pain, :) Like others have said I am very careful on doing anything to the back,
especially around the fads. :)

I feel sorry for you man!

that's a clear glue failur indeed.. too bad. But It would have probably stayed in one piece, if you hadn't cut through the backing. Next time lay some more layers at the handle for the same shape?
It was a gorgeous looking bow for sure...

Thanks for you sympathy. The bow turned out to light anyway, about #37. If you look closely at this next pic. you can see the glue staved joint. the wood under the backing was also a little wavy too. I will probably glue to together and hang it.
Sailor, the tips are curly (tiger) maple.

But she didn't die without leaving her twin behind. But its cut out for a left-handed friend of mine.

Here is the lesson...

Not much point in putting on a backing if you are going to compromise that backing by cutting through it.  Continuous fibers are strong but once severed are the weakest link, EVEN in the handle area
